Enteroviruses
Non-polio enteroviruses are very common viruses and include viruses such as: Coxsackieviruses, Echoviruses and Enteroviruses (like Enterovirus-D68 and Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease). They cause about 10 to 15 million infections in the United States each year. These viruses often cause mild infections such as colds, sore throats, and intestinal illnesses. In the United States, people are more likely to get infected with enteroviruses in the summer and fall.
Prevention Tips for Enteroviruses
It is important for everyone to take steps to protect themselves, their families and their community.
- Wash your hands often
- Wash hands especially after changing diapers
- Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands
- Avoid close contact with sick people
- Clean and disinfect surfaces
- Stay home when you are sick

About Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68)
EV-D68 is not a new virus; the virus was first isolated in California in 1962. Enterovirus-D68 (EV-D68) causes respiratory illness with a range from mild to severe respiratory symptoms. More severe illness has been showing up in children a history of asthma or wheezing.
Individuals with asthma are at higher risk for respiratory illnesses. It is important to discuss and update your asthma action plan with your healthcare provider.

About Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD)
Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a common viral infection caused by an enterovirus. HFMD is seen in children and infants. The virus causes a blister-like rash, and sores in the mouth. Like most other common enteroviruses, the virus leave the body through the stool of infected person and enters another person when hands, food or objects (such as toys) are contaminated with stool are placed in the mouth.
